Frequently Asked Questions

What is the average number of therapy sessions a person needs in order to receive help?

We never start therapy with a set number of sessions for each client in mind. Some clients see us every week for years. Other clients see us only one time. It is up to the therapist and the client to decide together what is right in terms of the duration and frequency of therapy. In general, though, people see a therapist for an average of about 10 sessions.

Why do you offer the first 30 minutes of my first session free?

It can be awkward to start therapy with clinician you do not know. It is important to feel comfortable with your therapist and know he is the right person to help you. By offering the first 30 minutes of the first session free, we have found that it frees people to visit us and make sure there is going to be a good fit before investing a lot of time, energy and money.

Am I guaranteed to feel better after going to therapy?

Unfortunately, the answer to this question is no. There is a tremendous amount of research on the benefits of therapy, and the vast majority of studies conclude that most people feel at least a little bit better after engaging in psychotherapy. A good number of people experience significant, but not necessarily complete, relief from their problems. A few people tend to feel about the same after therapy as they did before they started therapy. And, a very small number of people actually get worse as a result of engaging in therapy. Dr. Wachtel will do everything he can to make sure you have a positive experience in therapy, and that includes letting you know if he does not think it is working. He feels it is important to be open and honest with his clients and work with them to maximize their success.
