What is couples counseling? |
|
Couples counseling is similar to individual therapy, where a person is interested in learning more about him/herself and changing in positive ways. The biggest difference is that, rather than focusing on an individual as the client, most couples counselors consider the relationship between two people to be the client.
A romantic relationship is often much bigger than the sum of its parts. First, there are the personal histories and behaviors that each individual brings to the relationship. Then, there is the interact between those histories and behaviors to create a complicated set of circumstances between the two partners. When you add in parents, children, friends, and societal pressures, it is easy to understand how a relationship can become very complicated.
The goal of a couples counselor is to help the couple understand the complicated aspects of their relationship, and how each of them affects it with their individual behaviors and personal styles. Also, a main goal of couples counseling is often helping a couple learn to communicate more effectively with one another.
Many couples who enter therapy together are interested in saving their relationship. Some choose therapy to try to decide whether their relationship is worth saving at all. Still others enter into couples therapy to decide if they should end their romantic relationship. All of these are valid reasons for deciding to seek out a couples counselor.
Lenya is experienced in delivering high-quality couples counseling. She has worked with married couples, domestic partners and GLBT couples. New referrals are always welcome. Please call (303) 204-8271 to set up an initial appointment, or e-mail for more information. |
